What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is a dental intervention during which the tooth lining (nerve), i.e. the pulp, is removed. The goal of root canal treatment is to eliminate the infection and protect the tooth from extraction.
Root canal treatment is one of the most frequently performed dental procedures.
How long does root canal treatment take?
The duration of root canal treatment varies from patient to patient. During each visit, the actual treatment can last up to half an hour.
How many times is the root canal treatment?
Most of the root canal treatments can be done once or twice, but several treatments may be necessary depending on the nature of the inflammation.
Will a root canal really hurt?
With extra-strong anesthetic (Septanest – SEPTODONT), we ensure painless root canal treatment.
You may need root canal treatment:
if the tooth decay has already reached the nerves running inside the tooth
the tooth lining is inflamed and therefore feels severe pain
damage has occurred in the root canal as a result of injury
the tooth is dead, but you still want to save it instead of pulling it out
If you do not treat the problem in time
the infection can spread to the periosteum, which can cause serious, chronic diseases
the tooth may break or become so damaged that pulling becomes unavoidable
a pus-filled abscess can form in the gums, from which bacteria can enter the bloodstream and damage the heart valves.
The course of root canal treatment consists of the following steps:
1. Anesthesia
During root canal treatment, the dentist injects an anesthetic substance into the area around the tooth, which is not painful at all, only a momentary discomfort. In many cases, the injection site is numbed with an anesthetic gel, so that the needle is barely felt. In the case of treatment of the upper dentition, the injection is made next to the tooth, while in the case of the lower dentition, the substance is injected into a more distant nerve, which numbs a large part of the lower jaw.
2.Excavation of the tooth, cleaning of the root canals
This is done with a small drill, at which point the remaining part of the gum and the nerve can be removed. After discovering the root canals, they are cleaned and their outer surface is also removed with a small file.
3. Treatment of inflamed teeth, filling of root canals
If your tooth is inflamed, the dentist will not immediately use a permanent filling. First, a temporary medicated paste is placed, and the treatment can continue after a few days. When the inflammation subsides, after a final cleaning, a special substance is placed in the root canals, permanently sealing them off from bacteria. In the case of a very stubborn infection, the inflammation can last for weeks
4. Structure of the crown of the tooth
During the last step of root canal treatment, the doctor builds up the outer surface of the tooth, which gives it a full chewing surface. The whole process is painless, and even anesthesia does not cause more discomfort than a mosquito bite.
